St. Jude patients, alumni and their families returned to the hospital campus this month for Survivors’ Day 2013. The opening reception for the two-day event gave many survivors the chance to reunite with their hospital caregivers while registering for the next day’s events. Attendees also received updates and information about survivorship during a series of workshops and a panel discussion where survivors shared their own stories and received answers to questions about battling childhood cancer.
Actor and author Hill Harper, best known for his role as Dr. Sheldon Hawkes in the CBS drama CSI:NY, presented the event’s keynote address and joined Daniel Mulrooney, MD, of the St. Jude Survivorship Division, in leading a panel discussion that featured six survivors of childhood cancer. Harper also shared his personal journey as a cancer survivor. The conference, which was web cast, culminated with Harper, Mulrooney and St. Jude nurse practitioner and cancer survivor, Debbie Crom participating in a Google Hang-out where online attendees were able to continue asking questions about cancer treatment and survivorship.
