Going above and beyond

The Mullallys open their home and hearts to St. Jude every year for the FedEx St. Jude Golf Classic, earning them the award of 2015 Volunteers of the Year.

When purchasing a lot at the TPC Southwind golf course in Memphis, home of the FedEx St. Jude Classic, Dan and Shirley Mullally envisioned their future residence as a great place to host a charitable party.

They have since turned their prime location overlooking the 18th green into an opportunity to be ambassadors and fundraisers for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The couple allows St. Jude to host a private dinner at their home for donors and tournament sponsors the night of the annual tournament’s ProAm event. Then, the Mullallys host a two-day party for spectators during the tournament’s final rounds. Guests donate any amount they wish to St. Jude in order to attend.

This year’s event raised $44,500, which the Mullallys more than matched for a total donation to St. Jude of $90,000. Since it began, the Mullally's event has raised $265,000.  St. Jude recognized their generosity and dedication in July with the 2015 Volunteers of the Year award.

“For both my wife and myself it was very humbling, and very emotional,” said Dan, who is an executive with FedEx. “It’s something we were able to do and start, and it has grown into a worthy event, and gotten a lot of response from other people to support it.”

Dan said that over the past seven years they have enjoyed the camaraderie of the event and the mix of familiar and new friends that attend. Each year he and his wife receive notes and emails from an ever-growing group, thanking them for their gracious hospitality and providing all in attendance a chance to donate to St. Jude.

“It’s an opportunity to give back, and we are blessed to be able to do it,” Dan said.

You, too, can help St. Jude patients and families.
