Departmental Focus
The Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control was established in October 2005. At that time, the institution made a significant commitment of faculty positions, support staff, space, equipment, developmental funds, plus establishment of the St. Jude Lifetime (SJLIFE) cohort and the St. Jude Consortium for Pediatric Intervention Research (CPIR), to complement the research resource of the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS). The vision was to establish St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as an internationally-recognized leader in childhood cancer prevention and control, through an integrated, multi-disciplinary program encompassing epidemiology, outcomes and intervention research focused on pediatric cancer and other serious diseases of childhood. An additional objective in establishing the Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control was to facilitate and enhance multi-disciplinary interactions within the Cancer Center through an institution-wide program in cancer prevention and control. In considering the scope of the research agenda for the Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control, the primary strategy has been to build upon existing strengths in the area of childhood cancer survivorship.
