St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital offers an ASHP-accredited specialized Residency (PGY2) in Clinical Pharmacogenetics.
The purpose of the program is to prepare the resident to excel in the implementation of pharmacogenetic testing in clinical practice. The institution’s full integration of an electronic medical record that applies to inpatient and outpatient care, the comprehensive translational research programs, the highly skilled clinical pharmacy team, and the strong laboratory component to the Pharmaceutical Department provide unrivalled opportunities for clinical implementation of pharmacogenetics into patient care.
St. Jude runs an institution-wide program to implement pre-emptive pharmacogenetic testing (www.stjude.org/pg4kds), and the resident will assist in directing that program. The resident will provide pharmacogenetic consults in the context of a comprehensive approach to pharmaceutical care integrated into the clinical practice areas for St. Jude: general hematology / oncology, bone marrow transplantation, and ambulatory care. Training will be provided in applied pharmacokinetics, infectious diseases, nutrition support, and advanced pediatric pharmacotherapy. Each resident will work with established clinicians on interdisciplinary teams.
In addition, the resident will build pharmacogenetic clinical consults, and help develop clinical decision-support based rules for alerting clinicians of high risk gene-drug pairs to allow for genetically-guided drug dosing. The resident will be expected to write a manuscript for publication, and participate in patient education, drug information, quality improvement, and medication outcomes activities. Residents are highly involved in international efforts to implement pharmacogenetics on a broad scale via participation in CPIC (Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium https://www.pharmgkb.org/page/cpic). Upon completion of the program, the resident will have the clinical skills and necessary experience to practice in the field of clinical pharmacogenetics, and to implement pharmacogenetic testing in other health-system settings.
Pharmacogenetic residents have the opportunity to learn, contribute and participate in a dynamic environment that consists of professional and technical personnel in both patient care and pharmaceutical research. Along with direct patient care responsibilities, each resident will have the opportunity to gain experience in teaching through lectures, in-services, journal club presentations and precepting pharmacy students. A teaching certificate is currently offered by the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. An independent research project will be carried out during the course of the residency, with presentation of the findings at a national meeting.

- Leukemia / Lymphoma / Bone Marrow Transplant Ambulatory Care (1 month)
- Additional elective clinical rotation experience (1 month)
(Rotations selected by resident from the Oncology PGY2 elective list)
The resident will be expected to complete a research project and present the results at a national meeting. The research project will encompass one of the following areas: laboratory performance characteristics of genotyping techniques, creation of automated pharmacogenetic consults and alerts in the medical record, clinician actions based on point-of-care pharmacogenetic alerts, patient acceptance of pharmacogenetic information, and generalizability to other clinical settings through the Pharmacogenetics Research Network.
Throughout the year, the Clinical Pharmacogenetics resident will provide didactic lectures to pharmacy students and in-services to clinicians in regards to implementation of pharmacogenetics in the clinic. In addition, the resident will present at journal clubs, and may participate in the Pharmacogenetics Oversight Committee and other institutional meetings.
