In an effort to keep pace with the ever changing needs of Clinical Science Professionals, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has provided opportunity through its Pathology Shadow Program for college students to gain insight into the many opportunities available in clinical laboratory Sciences. This includes Medical Technology, Histotechnology, and Cytogenetic Technology.
When it comes to the challenge and rewards of medicine and science, medical laboratory professionals have the best of both worlds. St. Jude’s medical laboratory professionals work in all areas of the clinical laboratory, including the blood bank, chemistry, hematology, immunology and microbiology.
At St. Jude, select college students interested in allied health careers or with undeclared majors can gain firsthand knowledge and insight into the daily functions of the medical laboratory profession and clinical laboratory scientist in the chemistry, blood bank and hematology laboratories. However, due to privacy regulations, access to patient care areas is not allowed. Students observe pathology professionals; Medical Technologists perform routine and special laboratory tests, determine the accuracy of results in designated sections, and perform reagent and analyzer quality controls.
Please Note: This is not a hands-on experience; it is an observation and information experience only. This program offers qualified students in an approved academic setting the opportunity to observe medical technologists as they function within the work setting. The length of the program may vary.
