Is St. Jude really free?

Many families come to St. Jude thinking it’s like any other hospital. But because of our supporters, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — so they can focus on helping their child live.

Everyone's support makes a difference

Since we opened in 1962, our mission has been to find cures for kids with cancer and other life-threatening diseases, regardless of race, ethnicity, beliefs or a family’s ability to pay.

In the years ahead, an estimated 89% of the funds necessary to sustain and grow St. Jude must be raised from generous donors. This is why supporters are so important in fulfilling the promise of St. Jude founder Danny Thomas, who believed that "no child should die in the dawn of life."

If we had to live in the street for her to be at St. Jude we would have. But Azalea's doctor sat us down and one of the first things she said to us was, we can fix this. And the next thing she said was, we'll house you, and you don't have to worry about food or medical bills.

Thanks to our generous supporters, we're leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

It allowed us to focus on Nick without the burden of what all of this would cost: the clinic visits, physical therapy, radiation treatments, occupational therapy, school, dentist, pulmonologist, audiologist, endocrinologist, ophthalmologist, chemotherapy treatments, even pet therapy and music therapy and more, all of which we never received a bill for.

I can't imagine what life after treatment would be like if we were worrying about bills. I'm sure it would be significant to the point where second jobs would come into play, and then that's more time away from her.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

One in five children diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. won’t survive. St. Jude won’t stop until no child dies from cancer. With your support, we’ll be one step closer to that day. One cure closer. One child closer. Let’s cure childhood cancer. Together.
