Ladies of St. Jude

Ladies of St. Jude

The Ladies of St. Jude was formed to support the goals of entertainer and humanitarian, Danny Thomas.

Since 1956, the Ladies of St. Jude have supported the endeavors of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This group of dedicated women volunteers formed an organization to support the goals of entertainer, humanitarian, Danny Thomas, to build a hospital for children stricken with catastrophic diseases. These early pioneers of our organization worked diligently on fund raising and clerical work. Their dues were used to purchase postage and stationary to acknowledge these early donations toward the construction of the hospital. The group changed its name from "St. Jude Hospital Auxiliary" to "The Ladies of St. Jude" in 1960.

The hospital opened February 4, 1962, on a very meager budget. The Sisters of St. Joseph Hospital administered the nursing care. The Ladies of St. Jude worked day and night in the pharmacy, on the switchboard, patient areas, business office, kitchen or wherever needed. These ladies also met the patients at the airport 24 hours a day and housed them in their homes, while providing food, necessities and transportation during their stay in Memphis.

Without the Sisters of St. Joseph and The Ladies of St. Jude, we would never have gotten the operation of the hospital off the ground – and to this day, I am and always will be, eternally grateful to them.
