Summer Hospital Volunteer Opportunities

Have some free time this summer? Whether you’re cleaning patient toys or harvesting produce in the St. Jude garden, our summer program volunteers have the opportunity to greatly impact the St. Jude patient and family experience.

COVID-19 Notice to Volunteers

For the safety of our patients and families, we are not accepting applications for new volunteers at this time.

We hope to open applications in late 2021 or early 2022.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital!

St. Jude Summer Volunteers serve as Ready Runners, rounding wagons and wheelchairs throughout campus; lead games and activities in the Imagine Room; and play with patients and siblings, while cleaning toys in outpatient Child Life playrooms. Additionally, many volunteers run an Amenities Cart for families staying at Tri Delta Place and serve in the St. Jude Garden, helping grow and harvest produce for the Kay Kafe and the St. Jude Farmer’s Market. These dedicated volunteers contribute more than 1,000 hours over the summer months and greatly enhance the patient and family experience.

We welcome individuals living in the Memphis area between June and August to apply as a summer volunteer. Our Summer Volunteer Program is highly structured to accommodate individuals who wish to gain experience working in a hospital environment.

The patients have taught me that no matter how rough of a time you’re going through, there’s always a reason to smile and spread happiness to others. My time here made me look at life in a totally different way and to never take anything for granted.

Ashley Cobb, Summer Volunteer

Summer Volunteer Requirements

All summer volunteers at St. Jude must meet the following requirements:

  • Apply and complete paperwork requirements by the deadline given. Requirement details will be emailed after you have successfully completed an application and it has been reviewed.
  • Willing to perform and adapt to various volunteer duties.

You must be available to volunteer three times a week from June through August. Most shifts take place Monday-Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. for two to four hours. There are a minimal number of evening shifts available. If selected as a volunteer, you must attend a mandatory four-hour volunteer orientation.

Volunteers will be scheduled based on hospital needs and their availability.
