St. Jude is one of 30 finalists honored for supporting military personnel

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has been named a finalist for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve of the Department of Defense. The award is the highest honor given by the U.S. government to employers for their exceptional support of employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

The 30 award finalists were selected from 2,864 nominations from employees who serve in the guard or reserve, or their family members. Senior Department of Defense officials, business leaders and prior awardees will now select up to 15 Freedom Award recipients to be honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in September. This is the first year St. Jude has been a finalist.

“St. Jude values the discipline, skills, training and dedication demonstrated by our employees who serve in the military and strives to recognize their important contributions, as well as support them and their families during times of deployment,” said St. Jude Director and CEO Dr. William E. Evans. “We are grateful that one of our employees nominated St. Jude for this award, and we are honored to learn that we are among the 30 finalists. The fact that President Obama personally honored last year’s recipients at the White House speaks volumes about the importance of this recognition to our country.”

St. Jude has approximately 100 employees who are veterans or are on active duty.

To assist its military employees, St. Jude created the Military Support Resource Group in 2010. The internal group hosts events for veterans and service members, provides family-member assistance, recognizes and celebrates achievements within the group, and conducts calls with employees and family members of those who are deployed. In 2012, the hospital unveiled the Military Tribute Wall, which recognizes hospital employees who are current service members and veterans. The wall features military awards and highlights military-related events.

St. Jude also recruits veterans, guardsmen and reservists for employment through hiring events and the Department of Defense’s Hero2Hired program.

The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the auspices of the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Established in 1972, the ESGR is a Department of Defense agency whose mission is to gain and maintain employer support for guard and reserve service. Since the award was established, 190 employers from small and large businesses, as well as the public sector, have received the award.
