20 Years of Fun with Target
As part of your 20th anniversary of opening of the Target House, you were so gracious to host a variety of events throughout the year. In June, you held your Target Bullseye Bash Garden Party for St. Jude families featuring celebrity designers Chip and Joanna Gaines, with the theme based on Joanna Gaines latest children's book, We are the Gardeners. Target and the Gaines also built a playhouse on the grounds of Target House, which was unveiled during the Target House event.
Additionally, as part of his June hospital visit and in honor memory of St. Jude patient, Lizzy, Chip Gaines activated a "Chip in Challenge for St. Jude" social media campaign engaging celebrity friends Drew Barrymore, Lauren Daigle, Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, Jesse James Decker, Florida Georgia Line, Kacey Musgraves, Kevin Love and Dude Dad to participate in a fundraising competition for St. Jude. Fans helped raise more than $988,000 and combined with Chip's $547,000 matching gift, the promotion total skyrocketed to $1.5 million for St. Jude.
The online fundraiser alone garnered 327 million media impressions, including tens of millions of impressions from the Gaines' social media posts. People.com featured the Gaines visit, as well. Social posts surrounding the challenge were liked, commented on or shared 16,294 times on Twitter, 132,867 times on Facebook and 1.9 million times on Instagram.
In October, Laysha Ward, Executive Vice President and Chief External Engagement Officer, visited St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to interview patient families in the Target House Dining Room in October for her new column series, Shared Stories, with conversations centered around meal times and family recipe traditions. The awareness opportunity included Laysha and St. Jude patient families cooking cherished family recipes alongside recipes from Joanna Gaines, tying Joanna to the redesign of the Target House Dining Room where the segment was filmed. Target posted the video on their blog and shared via their social channels and media outreach.
To round out 2019, Target hosted their annual December Bullseye Bash to celebrate their 20th Anniversary of Target House for St. Jude families on the grounds of Target House. The event featured carnival games, giveaways, food trucks, a carousel and live performances by Kidz Bop in a carnival setting in a large, clear tent. Multiple high-level Target executives including Brian Cornell, Board Chairman and CEO, volunteered at the celebration and toured St. Jude while in town. More than 480 patient family members experienced the event.
To round out the celebrations, Rick Shadyac joined Rick Gomez, Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing and Digital Officer, in addressing Target associates at their national headquarters in Minneapolis to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Target House.
