How to treat a bleed

When your child has a bleeding disorder, it is important to act quickly when there is a bleed, whether it is an open wound or a bruise.

When an injury happens

Use the following plan to reduce the bleeding.

R = Rest – do not bear weight or use the affected limb.

= Ice the limb. Use ice pack over cloth to protect the skin.

C = Compress the limb. Use an elastic compression bandage (ACE) to provide support.

E = Elevate the limb. Try to keep the limb above your heart.

Treat a bleed with clotting factor as soon as you can and continue the “RICE” plan (above) for at least 24 hours.

If the bleeding does not improve, talk your child’s doctor or hematologist. At St. Jude, call the Bleeding Disorders Clinic at 901-595-5041. Afterhours and on holidays, call the main St. Jude number 901-595-3300 and ask for the hematologist on call. From outside Memphis, dial toll-free 1-866-2STJUDE (1-866-278-5833).
