The main hospital number is 901-595-3300. If you are outside the Memphis area, dial toll-free 1-8662STJUDE (1-866-278-5833). You may call your child’s clinic phone number during regular operating hours. Call the main hospital telephone number anytime you cannot reach your child’s primary clinic. You may request help from the doctor on call.
When to phone?
A St. Jude staff member is always here to help you with a problem, question, or urgent need. You may be asked to give these important facts:
- Your child’s sickle cell type _______________________

For pain episodes, your child should drink extra liquids, use heat packs or warm towels, and take prescribed pain medicines. If your child is still in pain after trying this, please call your nurse case manager. After hours, call the main hospital number and ask to speak to the hematologist (hee mah TOL oh jist) on call.
Watch for fever in your child. Any fever of 100.9 degrees F or greater is a medical emergency. If your child has a fever of 100.9 degrees F [38.3o C] or greater, call the clinic at 901-595-5041 right away. When your child has a fever, do not use medicines that will lower the fever, such as ibuprofen (Motrin®, Advil®) or acetaminophen (Tylenol®).
If your child develops a fever after 5 p.m. or on weekends, call the St. Jude operator at 901-595-3300 and ask to speak with the hematologist on call. If there is a delay in speaking with someone from St. Jude, seek urgent care at either a local doctor's office or local emergency department.
You should always call your child’s nurse case manager and let them know if you take your child to a local hospital or doctor for any unplanned or urgent medical treatment.
