St. Jude Children’s is committed to creating and maintaining a safe health care environment for our patients, their family members, visitors, and employees. This goal can only be achieved when everyone takes an active role in making the campus safe. Below the Security staff offers steps you can take to help ensure the safety of everyone on the St. Jude campus, including you and your child. St. Jude properties include the hospital, clinic, and housing.
Our security staff works hard to maintain a safe campus. Parents and caregivers can help the security staff in these efforts by keeping a watch on children at all times in the hospital and in housing.
If you have concerns about your child’s safety related to custody or family conflicts, tell your social worker. Our Security team can meet with you to make a safety plan. Also, if you know that someone wants to visit the hospital who could put our campus at risk because of that person’s behavior, please tell security and discuss this with your social worker.
Protecting your personal property
St. Jude is not responsible for lost or stolen property. You must keep your personal property secure while you are at the hospital as well as in St. Jude housing. Mark your personal items with a name and phone number just in case you misplace them in the hospital. If they are clearly marked, it will be easier for the staff to call you and return those items. If you find items around the hospital left by other St. Jude families, please take them to the Security officer at the Guest Services desk in either the Patient Care Center lobby or the Chili’s Care Center lobby.
Workplace violence and weapons on campus
St. Jude prohibits anyone from carrying a handgun, firearm, or prohibited weapon of any kind on hospital property. This includes not carrying a weapon in your personal vehicle if it is on St. Jude property. This policy does not apply to on-duty law enforcement officers. If you ever see a weapon on the St. Jude campus or in housing, call Security right away at 901-595-4444.
Most importantly, do not put yourself or anyone else in danger. If you ever have a weapon with you when you arrive on campus, please talk to the security staff right away. Security can make a plan with you to keep our campus safe until you are able to remove this weapon from our campus.
Reporting security-related events
All security-related events involving St. Jude patients, visitors, employees, or property should be reported as soon as possible. This includes those situations discussed above as well as theft of property, damage to property, suspicious behavior, and suspicious packages.
Use these emergency phone numbers when needed:
- Security: extension 4444 (from a cell phone dial 901-595-4444)
- Fire: extension 3499 (from a cell phone dial 901-595-3499)
- Life-threatening emergency: 911
Along with our team of St. Jude Security officers, the hospital also employs off-duty, uniformed Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers to provide around-the-clock police presence on the St. Jude campus. MPD officers are stationed at each campus entrance while the gates are open, and one MPD officer patrols the campus at all times. Along with calling one of the numbers above, you can flag down a security officer or MPD officer as needed.
Using 911 service from a campus phone
911 may be called by any employee, patient, or visitor to report an emergency:
- Dial 911 from any phone on campus that is able to dial an outside number. Do not dial 9 to get an outside line first. When you dial 911, the hospital operator and Security will also be told of the emergency.
- Keep in mind that you might be put on hold by the 911 operator. This can be upsetting, but it is possible.
- Stay on the line and be ready to tell the 911 operator about your emergency.
- Do not hang up on the 911 operator to answer other calls.
- Security will respond to the location where the 911 call was placed to provide help and to coordinate the response of emergency services.
Security call stations provide extra protection
Call stations are one way to reach Security in a hurry. Security offers 6 call stations in the parking lots near the Chili’s Care Center, Tri Delta Place, and the Kmart St. Jude Life Center. Call stations are also located near the elevators on every floor of all St. Jude parking garages.
When you push the call station button for help, the call is connected directly to the Security Control Room, which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The security control officer will send an officer to assist the call station user.
These call stations are for anyone who needs help, and it doesn’t have to be an emergency. If you have car trouble, feel sick, see something suspicious or need a lift to a building, push the call station button.
If you need to reach St. Jude Security at any time without going to a call station, dial 901-595-4444.
If you have further questions about security or any security concerns, please call 901-595-4444 or extension 4444 from a hospital phone.
St. Jude Security also offers a brochure about what you should do in certain emergency situations. It is called Responding in an Emergency for Parents and Caregivers. You can get a copy of this at the Guest Services desk in the Patient Care Center lobby and Chili’s Care Center lobby.
