Bowel prep for contrast enema

 

Your child has been scheduled for a colon exam in the X-ray department. Your child will need to clean out his colon the day before arriving for the appointment.

Please follow these guidelines for cleaning out the colon based on your child’s age.

Newborn-18 months

  • After 8 p.m. the night before the procedure, do not give your child any solids or formula. Give your child clear liquids only (Pedialyte®, broth, Jell-O®, popsicles) from 8 p.m. until after the procedure.

18 months-4 years

  • The day before the procedure, your child should have only clear liquids after 12 p.m. (noon). Give your child clear liquids only (Pedialyte®, broth, Jell-O®, popsicles) from noon until after the procedure.
  • At 2 p.m. the day before the procedure, give your child ¼ bottle or 2.5 oz (75mls) of chilled magnesium citrate by mouth. The pharmacy can supply cherry syrup for you to add to this lemonlime liquid if your child prefers that flavor. Your child needs to finish taking this dose within 20 minutes. Have your child drink an 8 oz glass of water (or other clear liquid) after taking this dose.
  • At 7 p.m. the day before the procedure, give your child another ¼ bottle or 2.5 oz (75mls) of the magnesium citrate by mouth. Your child needs to finish taking this dose within 20 minutes. Have your child drink an 8 oz glass of water (or other clear liquid) after taking this dose.
  • Your child’s stools should be watery and clear by 10 p.m. the night before the procedure.

4 years-8 years

  • Two days before the procedure, give your child one (1) 5mg bisacodyl, tablet by mouth. The child must swallow the pill, not chew.
  • The day before the procedure, your child should have only clear liquids after 12 p.m. (noon). Give your child clear liquids only (Pedialyte®, broth, Jell-O®, popsicles) from noon until after the procedure.
  • At 2 p.m. the day before the procedure, give your child ½ bottle or 5 oz (150mls) of chilled magnesium citrate by mouth. The pharmacy can supply cherry syrup for you to add to this lemon-lime liquid if your child prefers that flavor. Your child needs to finish taking this dose within 20 minutes. Have your child drink an 8 oz glass of water (or other clear liquid) after taking this dose.
  • At 7 p.m. the day before the procedure, give your child another ½ bottle or 5 oz (150mls) of the magnesium citrate by mouth. Your child needs to finish taking this dose within 20 minutes. Have your child drink an 8 oz glass of water (or other clear liquid) after taking this dose.
  • Your child’s stools should be watery and clear by 10 p.m. the night before the procedure.

8 years-18 years and older

  • Two days before the procedure, give your child two 5mg bisacodyl tablets by mouth. The child must swallow the pill, not chew.
  • The day before the procedure, your child should have only clear liquids after 12 p.m. (noon). Give your child clear liquids only (Pedialyte®, broth, Jell-O®, popsicles) from noon until after the procedure.
  • At 2 p.m. the day before the procedure, give your child one (1) 10 oz (300ml) bottle of chilled magnesium citrate by mouth. The pharmacy can supply cherry syrup for you to add to this lemon-lime liquid if your child prefers that flavor. Your child needs to finish taking this dose within 20 minutes. Have your child drink an 8 oz glass of water (or other clear liquid) after taking this dose.
  • At 7 p.m. the day before the procedure, give your child second 10 oz (300ml) bottle of the magnesium citrate by mouth. Your child needs to finish taking this dose within 20 minutes. Have your child drink an 8 oz glass of water (or other clear liquid) after taking this dose.
  • Your child’s stools should be watery and clear by 10 p.m. the night before the procedure.
