Linda R. Hajar Family Resource Center

At St. Jude, we believe that families are essential allies in providing the best physical and psychosocial care for their children. The Linda R. Hajar Family Resource Center is an important element in the family-centered care philosophy followed at St. Jude.

The Linda R. Hajar Family Resource Center is here to support you, your child’s primary source of strength as we partner in providing your child with the best care. In this quiet, comfortable space, you can:

  • Research topics related to your child’s health
  • Check e-mails, make copies, and send faxes
  • Read magazines
  • Check out a good book, or
  • Just escape for a little while.

The information you need

The Family Resource Center has information that you can trust about diseases treated at St. Jude and other medical topics. The center also carries community resource directories, parenting materials, and relaxing reading (fiction, inspirational, and children’s books).

The Family Resource Center offers learning materials in a format to fit your needs. In addition to books and magazines, we have:

  • Audiotapes, videotapes, and CDs
  • Pamphlets and brochures on topics of interest to St. Jude families
  • Reference guides, including medical dictionaries and local phone directories, and
  • Computers connecting you to the Internet, online medical journals, and databases that can help you pinpoint articles about topics of interest. Using the center’s data ports, you also can connect to the Internet using your own laptop computer. (See section 15.6, “GuestNet and Computer Use.”)

Location and hours of operation

The Family Resource Center is free and open to everyone—patients, caregivers, staff, and visitors. The St. Jude staff recommends that patients and their family members visit the center. It is located on the second floor of the Patient Care Center. The center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Conditions of use

Medical or health related information provided to you by the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Family Resource Center is not intended to take the place of the care and attention of a personal doctor or health care professional. Our aim is to promote active participation in your (your child’s) care and treatment by providing information and education. Questions about individual health concerns or specific treatment options cannot be answered by the Resource Center staff and should be discussed with your (your child’s) doctor.

Inclusion of material in the Family Resource Center collections does not imply any approval, recommendation, or endorsement of that material by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Always talk with your (your child’s) doctor if you have questions or concerns about your (your child’s) health and treatment plan.

The Family Resource Center offers materials for all age groups. The choice of library materials for personal use is an individual matter and patrons are free to reject materials of which they do not approve. Parents should know that they might not consider all resource center materials appropriate for their children.

Adult family members are responsible for deciding what Family Resource Center materials (print or Internet) their children can use.

Material will not be excluded from the collection based on the race, sex, nationality, political, social, or religious views of its author. No patron may censor or restrict the use of or access to library materials by other adult patrons.

Any objections to library materials or requests to remove library materials from the collection must be made in writing to a Family Resource Center staff member. The objection/request will be reviewed by the St. Jude Patient Education Committee.

Computers in the Linda R. Hajar Family Resource Center

You are welcome to use the computers located in the Linda R. Hajar Family Resource Center. Here, you can surf the Web and use Microsoft Office tools (such as word processing). You can use the computers anytime you need them, day or night. A password is not needed.

The Family Resource Center computers are popular. People may be waiting to use a computer during busy hours. We ask you to limit your time on these computers to 30 minutes when others are waiting. If you need help knowing when the next computer will be open, please ask a staff member.

An automatic timer begins when you sign on to the computer and logs off the computer after 30 minutes. You may sign on again at this time, if no one is waiting to use the computer. A staff member can turn off the timer if you have work to complete, such as homework or bill paying, which may require more than 30 minutes.

Children are welcome to use these computers for games and fun activities. However, if an adult is waiting, we may ask a child to let that adult use the computer to check e-mail or do research.

To use the Internet on these computers, you will need to accept the Internet usage agreement posted on the screen. Then you can use the links found on the Family Resource Center home page to see sites that are helpful for families at St. Jude. You also are free to view sites you choose yourself.
