You can clean your child’s tracheostomy (trach) tube if she has a Bivona® tube. The adult type of Bivona trach tubes can be cleaned and used again up to 10 times. The type for children and newborns can be cleaned and used up to 5 times. Only use them again for the same patient.
Mucus builds up in the trach tube and around it. Your child might be able to cough up the mucus, or he might not. If not, the mucus can dry out and block the trach tube. Suction helps remove mucus so your child can breathe better.
A tracheostomy is a small opening through the skin into the windpipe (trachea). This opening is called a stoma. A small plastic tube called a tracheostomy (trach) tube is placed through this stoma to help your child breathe.
