Clinical Education

 

In Rehabilitation Services, our audiologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech-language pathologists devote their time and effort to improving the health and quality of life of children with cancer, sickle cell disease and other life-threatening diseases.

We also train the next generation of health care professionals in these disciplines. We accept talented and motivated students for clinical placements who want to make a difference in the lives of children.

As a trainee, you will develop your clinical skills and gain experience in the cutting-edge practices of your profession.

  1. Externships

    St. Jude sponsors a unique externship opportunity in diagnostic audiology. While working with children and adults, students in the Audiology Clinic develop clinical skills in the following areas:

    • Ototoxic monitoring and rehabilitation through amplification
    • Evoked potential testing through ABR/ASSR/Chirp evaluations
    • Hearing aid verification and management

    Semester placements

    St. Jude offers third-year audiology students clinical placements for the summer semester.  Students work four to five days a week.  We also offer second- and third-year audiology students clinical placements during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Students work one to two days a week.

  2. Fieldwork placements: Level 1 and 2

    St. Jude offers clinical occupational therapy students Level 1 and second Level 2 fieldwork placements. Level 1 students work for one to two weeks; Level 2 students work for 12.

    Ask your fieldwork coordinator to make the initial inquiry. We require a formal application for Level 2 and doctoral students. Each student seeking a professional rotation must also submit an application, graduate transcripts and letters of recommendation.

    We interview qualified students in person or by telephone or Skype.

  3. Clinical placements

    St. Jude offers clinical placements for physical therapy and physical therapy assistant students. Physical therapy students work for eight to 16 weeks; physical therapy assistants work for five to six. Students may work in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

    We require a formal application, and we interview qualified students by telephone.

  4. Clinical placements

    St. Jude offers semester placements for graduate students in speech-language pathology.  We treat infants, children, adolescents and young adults with pediatric cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Students work in inpatient and outpatient settings. 

    We interview qualified students in person or by telephone. Please submit your application by the correct deadline:

    Semester placement deadlines

    • Summer semester: October 1
    • Fall semester: March 1
    • Spring semester: June 1

  5. We offer a learning experience for students early in their program. They can come to St. Jude, just for a day or two, to observe the real-world delivery of rehabilitation services to patients.

    Students may observe up to two days of clinical activity. You must meet the following criteria to be considered: 

    • 16 years of age or older
    • A high school or college student in good standing or planning to attend a graduate or professional school

    We do not consider incomplete applications.
