Events for Siblings at St. Jude

St. Jude child life specialists put on special events for patients, siblings, and other family members. These events can be educational, inspiring, or just fun.

These are some of the events planned for patients and their siblings:

A Gallery of Expression – Also called the Teen Art Show. At this one-day event, art by teenage patients and their siblings is displayed as it would be in a real art gallery. The event highlights St. Jude teen and young adult patients’ view of the hospital and other parts of life. The art includes photography, drawings, paintings, collage, music, beading, crochet, sculptures, and poetry.

Sibling Star Day – Siblings are such an important part of the family, but the focus is often on a sick brother or sister during treatment. The annual St. Jude Sibling Star Day is a special event that honors siblings. It helps acknowledge the ways brothers and sisters help in the healing process and gives them a time to shine. The day includes a therapy (talking) group for siblings age 3 and older. There is also a party for patients and families, honoring and thanking siblings for all they do, and a ceremony celebrating siblings.

All About the Body Week – Each day of this week teaches about a different part or system of the body in a creative, fun way. Activities teach patients and siblings how their bodies work. Previous highlights have included the“Scoop on Poop” and “It’s SNOT all about germs.” This event helps children understand the connections between their bodies and what happens to patients during treatment. Using hands-on activities helps patients and siblings understand medical topics.

Teen Formal - This event celebrates one of the most special events in a teenager’s life: prom. Patients and their siblings ages 13 to 19 are invited to dance the night away. Through generous donations from St. Jude staff and many local businesses, this glamorous evening, complete with red carpet, limousines, prom pictures, formal wear, and makeovers, is an unforgettable night for young adults at St. Jude.

All of Me - This event features interactive activities about self-esteem. St. Jude wants to help patients and siblings strengthen their self-image and socialize with each other. Patients and siblings do projects and activities, including photography, voice recordings, painting, drum circles, and yoga. The event ends with a “Showcase” where patients and siblings can display their finished projects and take part in a talent show.

Halloween – Child life specialists at St. Jude put together this hospital-wide event. Each year, areas secretly pick a theme and decorate their units for one day. Patients and siblings who want to take part get a map of more than 50 stops around the hospital, plus a trick-or-treat bag. Sugar and smiles galore!
