Physical Therapy: Non-pharmacologic pain management

Therapeutic modalities should be introduced early to treat generalized weakness and deconditioning as well as aches and pains associated with inactivity, immobility or soft tissue trauma.

Interventions commonly used by Physical Therapists for pain management include:

  • Electrical modalities such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and neuromuscular electrical stimulation
  • Thermal agents such as superficial heat or cold
  • Manual interventions such as massage, compression garments, exercise and orthotic devices.
