How to program a CADD Prizm® pump

 

Your child might need fluids or medicine from a device called a CADD Prizm pump. This information tells you how to program the pump at home.

How to program your child’s CADD Prizm pump

Follow the steps below in order. If you have questions, please ask your child’s nurse.

  • Put a new battery in the pump. The pump will go through a self-test and automatic review. The screen on your pump will say “Power up Successful.” Then the screen will say “STOPPED.”

  • Take the blue clip off your child’s IV tubing, if there is one. Insert the cassette hooks into the hinge pins on the bottom of the pump. Swing the cassette up into the latch position. Use a coin to close the latch. The screen will say, “High volume admin set latched.”
  • Press Next.
    • For all these directions, press Next to go forward to the next step. Press Enter when you make a change and want to save it.

  • If the IV bag has been running, the screen might say, “Reset reservoir volume to ____ ml?” Press Y. This resets the reservoir volume to the original amount.

  • When you attach the new cassette, the screen will say, “Prime tubing?” Press N.

  • The screen will say, “AutoLock not in use. Change lock level from LL0?” Press N.

  • When the screen says, “Start the pump?” Press N. First, you need to make sure the instructions on your child’s fluid bag match the pump program.

  • The screen will say “Stopped.” Press Next.

  • The screen will say “Reservoir Volume.” Look at the label on the fluid bag.
    • If the reservoir volume (also known as Compounded Volume) on the screen matches the amount on your child’s bag, press Next.
    • If the reservoir volume on the screen is different from your child’s bag, use the Y or N keys to set the correct volume. Then, press Enter, because you made a change.
       
  • The screen will say, “Infusion profile has been reset.” This only stays on the screen for one (1) or 2 seconds.

  • The screen will say “Infusion Volume.” Look at the label on the fluid bag.
    • If the infusion volume (also known as Ordered Volume) on the screen matches the amount on your child’s bag, press Next.
    • If the infusion volume on the screen is different from your child’s bag, use the Y or N keys to set the correct volume. Then, press Enter, because you made a change.
       
  • The screen will say, “Infusion profile has been reset.” This only stays on the screen for one (1) or 2 seconds.

Set the infusion time

  • The screen will say “Infusion Period.” This is how long it takes the fluid or medicine to run out of the bag. Check your child’s bag to see the infusion time.
    • If it matches what is on the screen, press Next.
    • If it does not match, use the Y or N keys to set the time. Press Enter, because you made a change.

  • The screen will say “Taper-Up Period.”
    • Press the Y or N keys to set the time of the up-ramp. Press Enter.
    • If there is no change in the up-ramp, press Next.

  • The screen will say, “Taper-Down Period.”
    • Press the Y or N keys to set the time of the down-ramp. Press Enter.
    • If there is no change in the down-ramp, press Next.

  • The screen will say “Plateau Rate,” and “KVO Rate.” KVO means keep vein open. Press Next.

 

CADD Prizm Pump
  • The screen will say “Millimeters Given.” When you are hanging a new bag, clear the amount. Press Enter. That way, 0.0 ml shows on the screen.

  • While the screen says “Stopped,” connect tubing to your child and get ready to start the infusion. If you are using the pump for total parenteral nutrition (TPN), learn more by reading “Do You Know … Giving TPN with a CADD Prizm pump.”

Starting the pump

Press the Stop/Start key to start the pump. The screen will say, “Start the pump? Press Y or N.” Press Y.

  • The green light at the top of the pump will blink every 3 seconds when the pump starts running. The screen will say “RUNNING.” There is an arrow pointing up, to show the medicine is tapering up. If your child does not have a taper, the arrow will point to the right.

  • After 60 seconds, the pump screen will go blank to save the battery life. If you want to see the screen again, press any key to turn on the screen.
