Daily cleaning of patient rooms

Why does St. Jude clean each patient room every day?

Research shows that germs—bacteria and fungus—on surfaces can lead to infection. Keeping the area around your child clean removes the germs and helps prevent infection. So, cleaning the room every day is as important to your child as their daily baths and linen changes. Also, keeping the patient room clean and orderly makes things easier for the medical team when they are in the room treating your child.

Who does the daily cleaning?

Trained Environmental Services staff follow a checklist of tasks to decrease bacteria, viruses, and debris that could cause infection. Staff use hospital-grade disinfectants that are safe to use around patients and families and still effective. They use stronger cleaners, such as bleach, if needed.

What parts of the patient room are most important to clean?

High touch surfaces, such as bedside tables, call buttons, game controls, areas around the sink and bathroom fixtures, should be cleaned daily. Sometimes a room needs to be cleaned more often, such as when there is an accident.

What can you as a parent and caregiver do to help?

Refuse to clutter – Help keep the bedside and other workspaces clutter free by removing any unneeded items.

Refresh – During a lengthy stay, change out the patient’s comfort items often. This will give you a chance to clean these items away from the hospital.

Request – If your child’s room needs cleaning right away, request help through the SJTV system or talk to the nurse.
