On the day of my daughter Aylin's quinceañera — or 15th birthday — I couldn't help but think about everything she has been through. It was a day to remember everything that we lived to get to this day, each step taken until reaching this moment. When Aylin was 12 years old, doctors discovered a mass in her liver. She was referred to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®, where she was diagnosed with cancer. She finished treatment but relapsed at the end of 2024. Today she continues to receive treatment at St. Jude

When Aylin was 12 years old, doctors discovered a mass in her liver.

That day in August when we were celebrating her birthday, I remembered all our conversations and some of the hardest moments, especially when we received bad news from doctors. I urged her repeatedly to be strong and to trust the treatment. My intention was to encourage her, and I think my words helped her. Aylin became incredibly strong.

On the day of her 15th birthday celebration, I felt a mix of emotions: great joy to be able to accompany her and, at the same time, sadness and nerves. She also was nervous when it was time to dance.

The moment we started dancing, with the song "Vals de Amor" by Joan Sebastian that she chose, I wanted to encourage her, as I have always done. As we danced, I told her how much I loved her and not to be nervous. She cried, and I whispered to her that she should enjoy the moment as much as possible, that she’s allowed to live it fully without fear. After that, everything changed. Her tears turned into smiles. The nerves and all the sadness were gone. We spent a very beautiful night with family and friends, full of joy and dance. We enjoyed it all.

The most important thing is that she allowed herself to fully live her celebration, which was what I wanted most. I want Aylin to continue enjoying every moment of life — of the second life God and St. Jude have given her. May she always live fully. That's what I want for my daughter, Aylin.
