Phenix was diagnosed with infant-type hemispheric high-grade glioma (IHG), a rare and fast-growing, high-grade brain tumor that primarily affects children under the age of one.

Support St. Jude

When I got the call that my grandson Phenix had a seizure and was being rushed to the hospital, I waited anxiously for updates. Then came the devastating news: He had a brain tumor. Without hesitation, I packed my bags and drove straight to where Phenix, who was just a few months old, had brain surgery. He then was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® in Memphis, Tennessee, for further treatment. I headed there, too.

Phenix was diagnosed with infant-type hemispheric high-grade glioma (IHG), a rare and fast-growing, high-grade brain tumor that primarily affects children under the age of one.

In Memphis, I didn’t even unpack my suitcase. I left it open on the other bed. My daughter asked why I didn’t put my things away, and I told her, “We’re not going to be here that long.” And we weren’t, although some days it felt like a long time.

While in Memphis, where Phenix had a second brain surgery, it felt different. Peaceful. That’s the only word I can use. After his surgery, I remember, he was sleeping calmly, and that peacefulness made it easier for his parents and the rest of the family. It was truly a blessing to be able to be there with Phenix.

St. Jude was amazing. The nurses, the doctors and everyone were incredible. I spoke with many of the staff, and they all said the same thing: They love working there. It’s not just the staff, parents and visitors who feel the same way. It’s like a big family, everyone going through something similar with their children.

I always tried to stay in the background. I just wanted to be there if my daughter needed me. I was her support system, especially when things got heavy. She could lean on me. I’d pick up the slack when she needed me to. We all worked together.

Phenix had rough days, but we got through them. I never wanted my daughter to face this alone. I was there to protect her, guide her and cover both her and Phenix.

My grandson finished treatment and is now being monitored closely every few months by St. Jude. And now, he is doing well. He’s growing up so fast. He’s walking, talking and getting into everything. We thank God for this blessing. And I thank St. Jude for saving my grandbaby.
