After more than five decades on the road, playing music to express love, loss and everything in between, Los Tigres del Norte recently experienced something that, by their own account, struck differently.
In the middle of their “Los Tigres del Mundo” international tour, the regional Mexican music legends made a stop that had nothing to do with a stage or a spotlight: a visit to the campus of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® in Memphis, Tennessee. There, they learned about the comprehensive care patients receive and the scientific research that happens on the campus. Lead vocalist Jorge Hernández said the visit gave them an up-close look at the real-life impact of a mission that transforms the lives of thousands of children and families.
The family band, based in California, also spent time playing games with patients and their loved ones, mingling with families and taking photos together. Moved by what they experienced, Los Tigres del Norte committed to promoting the mission of St. Jude: Finding cures. Saving children.®
The five musicians donned the Music Gives to St. Jude Kids shirt and posed for the cameras. More than a gesture of solidarity, the shirt invites supporters to join St. Jude as Partners In Hope®, a community of monthly donors whose support helps ensure children can receive lifesaving care. Artists across genres, influencers and supporters everywhere have worn the shirt to help fund lifesaving cancer research.
When did you first hear about the St. Jude mission?
Jorge Hernández: We heard about this incredible work a long time ago and we always wanted to visit the hospital. That’s why we’re here. I truly believe this is one of the most beautiful works on Earth, because it gives families hope during some of their most difficult moments.
What stood out to you about the work St. Jude does?
Hernán Hernández: We were really moved to learn that St. Jude cares for children from both inside and outside the United States, without regard to race, religion or financial situation. That touches your heart, and it’s why we wanted to be part of this mission.
Beyond seeing the buildings and facilities, how did it feel to know that lifesaving research also happens here?
Luis Hernández: It truly touches our hearts and inspires us to help spread the word about this work. It also makes us want to be more generous, to contribute something beyond our music. Being here and sharing the message of St. Jude encourages everyone to keep supporting the children who need it most around the world.
What message do you want to share with your fans after this visit?
Eduardo Hernández: What we want to say is that they should continue supporting St. Jude, make a donation, because it doesn’t take much to make a difference. By doing so, they’re helping children who truly need it and, in that way, helping the future of humanity.
Many of you are parents. What does it mean to visit a place where so many families find support during such difficult times?
Jorge Hernández: It means something very special, because you feel this is a place we should all support — where we can share something about ourselves and become part of something much bigger.
Hernán Hernández: It’s very important to give back a little of the tremendous amount the public has given us. All of us are fathers, some of us are now grandparents, and we thank God that our children were born healthy. That’s what motivates us to support this cause. It’s incredible that families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, transportation, housing or food, so they can focus entirely on helping their children. That’s something everyone should know, because many families who come here don’t have the resources to afford treatment. This is a vital mission, and one we should all support.
