When I lived in Santiago, Dominican Republic, I always had a calling to want to help people. I studied in a Catholic school of nuns. On the weekends, my parents would take me to a hospice in the city where there were elderly people. Every time we went, I brought them lollipops and cookies. Thus began my call to help.

Years later, living in New York, I collected toys and then distributed them to poor children during my home visits to the Dominican Republic. I continue to give away toys and medical equipment, such as walkers, wheelchairs, diapers and other items.

In 2017, I learned about St. Jude Children's Research Hospital® while watching TV with my cousin. She motivated me to call. I called ALSAC's New York City office, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude, and made an appointment for an interview.

I then started spending time in the office doing everything I could to help, including sending out flyers and invitations to events. I volunteered two or three times a week. And then I started working on events, and I haven't stopped since.

St. Jude allows me to help innocent children who have been diagnosed with serious illnesses and who have every right to realize their dreams, just like anyone else.

Now, several of my friends who have since also become volunteers and I go back and forth together to and from fundraising events.

We attend radiothons, dinners, galas, golf tournaments and participate in other annual activities, such as the St. Jude Walk. I always make sure that the volunteers have transportation.

I have attended events in many areas of the Northeast, including the Hamptons in New York, as well as New Jersey and Connecticut. Sometimes I've helped at three events a week. And at each one, I help with anything that might be needed: decorating tables with flowers and candles, handing out raffle tickets, coordinating silent auctions, greeting guests, and making sure they feel welcome and comfortable. I also make sure to remind everyone of the importance of their participation.

My heart fills with great joy every time I am at an event because I have the opportunity to hear from the families and children helped by St. Jude, and I know that with my help they will benefit in some way. That motivates me to continue to volunteer.

St. Jude allows me to help innocent children who have been diagnosed with serious illnesses and who have every right to realize their dreams, just like anyone else.

I always say that seeing many people in the same place, doing beautiful things, is a good thing.

I was recently recognized for my years of service by ALSAC's New York office. I'm grateful for the recognition, but even more grateful to be able to volunteer and help, in some way, to the lifesaving mission of St. Jude.
