The long-term goal of my research is to develop novel radiation therapy methods and apply new technology to minimize normal tissue toxicity while improving tumor control for pediatric malignancy. First, long-term follow up data for patients with brain tumors and solid tumors after radiotherapy will provide valuable information to identify radiation dose-volume thresholds, establishing clinical constraints for treatment planning, and predicting the likelihood and severity of normal tissue toxicity for individual patients. Second, the application of intensity-modulated radiation therapy and proton beam in pediatric radiotherapy will further improve the distribution of dose and reduce normal tissue irradiation. Third, functional and physiological image-guided tumor extent delineation and identification of high tumor burden subvolumes with PET and MRI will facilitate more precise tumor targeting and normal tissue sparing. Combined with immobilization and localization specifically designed for pediatric patients, highly conformal radiotherapy can be safely and precisely delivered.
