Elizabeth Andersen spent her time as an undergraduate researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln working in a gut microbiome laboratory, funded through the NE-INBRE program. There, she studied potential probiotics and their applications as therapeutics for people with obesity and diabetes. More specifically, Andersen analyzed certain Lactobacillus species and their role in the regulation of host genes involved in lipid metabolism and inflammation using diet-induced obesity mouse models.
Through the UCARE program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Andersen also worked in a host-parasite lab, with her research focused on transmission dynamics between the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna and two newly discovered novel parasitic decomposers. This research allowed her lab to uncover novel insights into the life history strategy of these organisms.
From there, Andersen developed a strong interest in cancer research with her work in the host-microbe space giving her a special appreciation for the complex cellular interactions within the tumor microenvironment. Andersen is particularly interested in understanding how these dynamics influence disease progression and can be leveraged to develop novel therapeutics.
In addition to her own research experience, Andersen has had the opportunity to mentor students both in the lab and in the classroom. Through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln STEM-POWER program, she was paired with an incoming freshman interested in research and helped them develop essential laboratory skills. Andersen also worked as a teaching assistant for two upper-level biochemistry courses, an incredibly rewarding experience of engaging with students and helping them navigate difficult coursework and concepts.
Andersen chose the St. Jude Graduate School for its unwavering commitment to impact, translational pediatric research. The opportunity to train alongside leading researchers makes her confident that she can contribute to their mission while growing as a scientist.
