Applied Biomedical Data Sciences Master’s Program

An exceptional data science program at a leading institution for applied biomedical data sciences

Explore an extraordinary opportunity to earn a Master of Science (MS) degree in Applied Biomedical Data Sciences from the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Data science is a rapidly growing profession, with applied biomedical data sciences fueling the advancement of research in a data-driven age. The program offers students an opportunity to learn from a robust academic curriculum and then apply those learnings in biomedical research settings through a mentored practicum at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Training in the Applied Biomedical Data Sciences program spans many subdisciplines in data science, including advanced computing, biostatistics, computational biology, and machine learning.  The program gives students a robust portfolio of skills to tackle the most complex and pressing data science problems arising in current biomedical research.

Students will develop practical skills in areas such as project planning, data wrangling and biomedical applications. Led by renowned experts in data science and adjacent fields, the Applied Biomedical Data Sciences program provides students with a unique experience that primes them to advance biomedical science. The data science program develops and applies skills towards discovering and developing cures for catastrophic childhood diseases.

In ten months of accelerated coursework followed by a twelve-month, in-person practicum, students gain an unparalleled foundation in the biomedical data sciences.

    Research Interests

    • Development of statistical methodology to identify biologically and clinically relevant genomic alterations
    • Creation of novel methods that integrate multiple pharmacologic and clinical endpoints with multiple forms of genomic data

    Short Biography

Stan Pounds earned a BS in Mathematics from Harding University. Upon completing an MS in Computational Mathematics and a PhD in Statistics from Texas A&M University in College Station, he joined the Biostatistics faculty at St. Jude in 2002. Stan develops and applies innovative statistical methods that integrate multi-omics, pharmacologic, and clinical data to gain new biological insights that lead to better therapies for childhood cancer, particularly pediatric leukemias. As the leading faculty biostatistician for the St. Jude acute myeloid leukemia clinical trials research program, he develops trial designs; monitors, reports, and analyzes trial data; and co-authors publications of the scientific results. Stan actively collaborates with basic science researchers in securing grant funding, developing experimental designs, and performing data analyses. In the St. Jude Graduate School, Stan is also an enthusiastic mentor and educator who teaches biostatistics across multiple degree programs and leads the development of the MS in Applied Biomedical Data Sciences program.
