Pei Tan, a Memphis native, joins the St. Jude Graduate School and the Applied Biomedical Data Sciences program with a passion for the intersection of data and technology with biology and chemistry. This enables her to merge her academic background to the current experiences as a data analyst. Her previous research focused on bacteria identification and stereotypic behaviors in captive species.
Tan graduated from Rhodes College in Memphis with a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. She was also a research intern for the Memphis Zoo, studying and helping conduct research on the stereotypic behaviors in the polar bears Koda and Haley. She was also a data analyst associate for the non-profit organization Civic Tennessee, developing her data and tech skills to give data-driven recommendations to partners across the state.
Tan's academic and professional experiences built the foundation and kindled her passion for the field of biomedical data science in the way it integrates biological insights with analytical techniques, merging data and science together. St. Jude, with its prominent standing in biomedical research and state-of-the-art technology, offers unparalleled opportunities to advance in the field of data science and to gain a network of valuable mentorships. Therefore, the St. Jude Graduate School’s Applied Biomedical Data Sciences program is the environment where she wants to grow and strengthen her roots.
