Short Biography

Bente Mikkelsen, MD, joined the Department of Global Pediatric Medicine as Director of Global Engagement Strategies. Dr. Mikkelsen graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Oslo and specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology, later earning a Health Management and Health Economics Master’s degree. 

Throughout her career, Dr. Mikkelsen has been a key figure in global health, particularly in the realm of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). She recently served as the Director of the NCD Department at the World Health Organization (WHO) and previously held a directorship at the WHO Regional Office for Europe. Dr. Mikkelsen has held diverse leadership positions including the CEO of the South Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the World Diabetes Foundation, a Senior Advisor at Oslo Science City, and Chair of the Advocacy Steering Committee at the World Heart Federation.

Dr. Mikkelsen's areas of focus include strategic planning, health care management, and the implementation of large-scale public health reorganizations. She has been instrumental in building global partnerships and advocating for quality improvement and innovation at the country and community levels. Dr. Mikkelsen has extensive experience in change management, leadership development, and fostering research and development.
