Research Strengths

A strong commitment to basic research supports creative exploration and a deeper understanding of the genetic and molecular factors that cause disease. Fundamental discoveries feed into translational research programs and clinical trials to advance treatment.

St. Jude has leading research programs in many areas including:

St. Jude offers outstanding institutional support for scientists to encourage bold, innovative research. As a doctoral student, you will have access to an impressive array of state-of-the-art shared resources and core facilities. Each facility is staffed by experts who can train you on new technologies, execute experiments, or provide insights into experimental design and analysis. 

Visits to St. Jude core facilities are incorporated into the first-year graduate curriculum to allow you to observe the technologies in operation and learn about our extensive onsite capabilities. 

Throughout your degree program, St. Jude core facilities and their expert staff are available to help you master new experimental approaches and accelerate your work.

 
 

Large Collaborative Projects

Large-scale research initiatives, a hallmark of the St. Jude collaborative culture, help drive innovative science across the institution. For example:

  • As an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, St. Jude connects scientists and clinicians in formal programs focused on tackling specific research questions and advancing cures. 
  • The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project, a collaboration between St. Jude and Washington University in St. Louis, is the world’s most ambitious effort to discover the genetic origins of childhood cancers. 
  • St. Jude is a major center for influenza research, serving as both an NIAID-designated Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance and a WHO Collaborating Center.
  • The St. Jude International Outreach Program works with clinicians and researchers around the world to improve global survival rates of children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
  • Structured efforts to discover new drugs and therapeutics benefit from outstanding infrastructure for small molecule discovery, an on-campus Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility and a robust clinical trials portfolio.
