Joycie Eulah H. Abiera, MD, FPARM, is a pediatric rehabilitation specialist focused on advancing the integration of rehabilitation into child health care in the Philippines through technology-enabled approaches. She is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines Manila – College of Medicine and an Attending Physiatrist at the University of the Philippines–Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) and Philippine Children’s Medical Center. She serves as Vice Chair for Service, Program Director of the Prosthetics and Orthotics Fellowship, Co-Director of the Motion Analysis Program (ORTHOMAP), and Section Head of Cancer Rehabilitation at UP-PGH. She also holds adjunct academic appointments at Marquette University and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
With over 15 years of experience, her work focuses on pediatric rehabilitation, gait and motion analysis, prosthetics and orthotics, and functional outcomes in children with complex conditions, including pediatric cancer. She completed advanced training at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (now the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab) and was a visiting scholar at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
Guided by the principle that survival alone is not enough, children must be able to move, participate, and live with dignity, she develops integrated, multidisciplinary rehabilitation pathways. Her work focuses on scalable, technology-enabled approaches for low- and middle-income settings.
She is a recipient of the Young Physician Leader Award from the InterAcademy Partnership in conjunction with the World Health Summit (2012). She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Global Child Health at St Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where she is developing advanced expertise in implementation science and health systems to scale sustainable, equitable pediatric rehabilitation across resource-limited settings.
