Melanie Helms is a molecular researcher with a global perspective and a deep curiosity about how cells respond to biochemical and environmental challenges. Her academic journey spans continents—from studying biochemistry and English at The University of Texas at Austin to completing a master’s degree in Medical Science at Kyoto University in Japan. These diverse experiences have shaped her multidisciplinary approach to scientific inquiry and her dedication to translational research with global impact.
As an undergraduate, Helms gained early research experience through UT Austin’s Freshman Research Initiative, where she contributed to developing a high-affinity ligand library for the sigma-2 receptor. Her interest in organic synthesis and biochemical systems deepened during her graduate studies in Japan, where she focused on small molecule self-assemblies and their ability to interact with denatured proteins—an innovative strategy for preventing ER stress.
Helms’ research interests lie in how cells and cellular processes adapt to external stimuli and manipulation. Whether through protein-ligand interactions, genetic regulation, or immunotherapy, she is motivated by the potential to develop novel solutions to longstanding biomedical challenges. Her work is guided by a commitment to collaborative science that bridges disciplines and borders.
Having lived and worked in Japan for six years, Helms brings a unique perspective on international research collaboration and scientific culture. She joined the Biomedical Sciences PhD program at the St. Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences to pursue her goal of becoming a leader in globally cooperative translational research. At St. Jude, she is excited to work alongside world-class scientists and contribute to discoveries that extend care and cures to children around the world.
