Lawrence Osei-Tutu, MBChB

Lawrence Osei-Tutu, MBChB, is a pediatric hematologist-oncologist and clinician-researcher at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana, where he has spent over a decade caring for children with severe hematological disorders and cancer. His clinical and research work spans sickle cell disease, pediatric brain tumors, malaria, and efforts to adapt evidence-based therapies from high-income settings to resource-limited environments.

After earning his MBChB and BSc in Human Biology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Dr. Osei-Tutu completed pediatric residency training in Ghana and later specialized in pediatric hematology-oncology through a fellowship at the University of Cape Town. His commitment to advancing equitable care has led to leadership in clinical trials, strengthening health systems, and quality improvement—driven by a vision of delivering compassionate, family-centered healthcare.

Dr. Osei-Tutu’s research has been widely published, including recent work on stroke in sickle cell disease, ethical frameworks for research in Africa, and the implications of malaria vaccine dosing. He has earned recognition at both regional and global forums, including a top abstract award at the 2024 St. Jude Global Alliance Convening and Best Poster Presentation at the 2024 SIOP Africa conference. He is also a past Fogarty Fellow and an alum of the American Society of Hematology Visitor Training Program.

Now, through the Global Child Health master’s program at the St. Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Osei-Tutu is expanding his skills in systems thinking, implementation science, and collaborative problem-solving. He sees this training as vital to advancing sustainable, high-impact healthcare reforms in Ghana and beyond—and to shaping a future where all children, regardless of geography, have access to quality care.
