High-quality nursing care is at the heart of successful treatment for children with cancer. To improve patient care and survival rates in low- and middle-income countries, the St. Jude International Outreach Program provides specialized training, education and resources for pediatric oncology nurses at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital partner sites around the world.
Our initiatives include:
- Nurse educator training
- Self-paced and instructor-led training modules
- Ongoing online mentorship and collaboration for trainees
The Latin American Center for Pediatric Oncology Nursing Education
One of our major nursing initiatives is the Latin American Center for Pediatric Oncology Nursing Education in Santiago, Chile. Through this center, which operates under St. Jude leadership, we provide a comprehensive 4-week training curriculum for nurse educators working in pediatric oncology settings around the world. Our trainees come to the Center from St. Jude partner sites in the Philippines, Morocco, Mexico, Central America and South America, as well as other international centers.
Upon returning to their local hospitals, trained nurse-educators develop an orientation program for all newly hired nurses working on their pediatric oncology units. They also continue to have regular meetings with St. Jude nursing staff.
Through these and related efforts, our work is significantly improving the quality of patient care and advanced nursing knowledge, skills and professionalism at St. Jude international partner sites.
