Matching Gifts Program | FAQ

1. What is a matching gift?

A matching gift is when a person donates to a non-profit organization and their employer donates an equal or greater amount to the same non-profit. A matching gift is a great way for a donor to double or even triple their contribution to help St. Jude in finding cures for childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

2. How do I apply for a matching gift?

To make a matching gift, first go to the Matching Gifts page and use our search tool to find your employer. If the company is in our database, select it and you will see the specific instructions for that company’s matching gifts process. Parent and subsidiary companies within organizations have different requirements and procedures, so please search for each company individually.

3. How do I know if my employer will offer a matching gift for a donation?

Visit our Matching Gifts page and use the search function to find the name of the company. If the company has matched gifts to St. Jude in the past, you’ll find resources specific to the company such as minimum and maximum match amounts, program guidelines and information on getting your donation to St. Jude matched.

4. Where can I see a list of all companies that match my donations to St. Jude?

You can use our database to search for any company on our Matching Gifts page.

5. What should I do if I can't find my employer in the matching gifts search?

If you didn't find your employer in the list, there is a good chance it is not in the database. To help encourage your employer to match gifts to St. Jude, you can use our templated letter and submit your request to your HR department.

6. What happens if a matching gift is not approved?

If a matching gift company does not approve a matching gift, the company will contact both the employee and the organization with the reason the match was rejected.  Most often a matching gift is rejected because the donation amount isn’t within the program parameters specified by the company.

7. How long will it take for my company to receive my matching gift form from St. Jude?

It can take 2-4 weeks to process the matching gift form.

8. How long will it take the matching gift company to process and mail a check for the matching gift?

It varies for each company. If the matching company approves the matching gift, the company will send a check for the matching gift according to their company guidelines. You may contact the matching gift company directly to find out how often matching gift checks are processed and mailed.

9. Can I mail a matching gift form to St. Jude?

Yes, a matching gift form can be mailed to us.  The best practice is to send your matching gift form and include the date and amount of the donation made to St. Jude.  The employee should complete the matching gift form according to the company’s matching gift instructions, sign, and date.  If you are the spouse of the matching gift company’s employee, please ensure that you include your spouse’s name.

Matching gift forms should be mailed to:
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
ATTN: Matching Gifts
501 St. Jude Place
Memphis, TN 38105

If the matching gift company has an online matching gift process, the donor will be responsible for completing the matching gift process via the company’s database.
