Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program

Explore the unique multidisciplinary & translational research training opportunity offered through the St. Jude Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program.

About the program

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital offers an opportunity to work closely with a unique patient population while learning from mentors and investigators at the top of their fields. Our strong, multidisciplinary and translational research culture integrates clinical care, research and education at every level, under a unique funding model that provides generous resources to support innovation and leading-edge treatment advances.

We train top-caliber future leaders in academic pediatric hematology-oncology. Our fellows graduate from the program with:

  • A comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of pediatric hematologic and oncologic disorders
  • Competence in the clinical diagnosis and management of these disorders
  • An understanding of clinical trials methodology
  • In-depth experience in a selected research area

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship is a three-year commitment, which can be extended to accommodate clinical and research needs. The first year provides comprehensive clinical training. Subsequent years are devoted to active, direct involvement in clinical, basic or translational research. We strive to provide an experience that advances each individual’s career goals, so the clinical schedule, research activities and educational opportunities can be customized to align with your specific areas of interest.

The fellowship is certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and leads to subspecialty certification.

The St. Jude Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Leadership is happy to support fellows who wish to pursue further education or research in a variety of ways. Our program partners with several local and national universities and colleges for those fellows who are seeking Master’s or Doctoral degrees, including the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Our fellows also have the opportunity for more advanced research activities through our competitive Physician Scientist Instructor (PSI) program or NCI K12 Pediatric Oncology Career Development Program.  PSI provides 3 years of mentored research time and clinical experience to facilitate the transition to an independent career as an academic physician-scientist (laboratory or clinical research). NCI K12 program provides 2 years of collaborative mentorship and protected time for early career faculty to engage in career development and education needed to conduct patient-oriented research.

Finally, those fellows who are interested in more specialized careers can participate in a variety of more focused one-year specialty training programs here at St. Jude.
