In this new environment of social distancing and isolation brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for communication and connection among our volunteers has become more important than ever.

To address this need, ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude, launched a Facebook group called ALSAC/St. Jude VolunteersOur goal is to create a robust volunteer community where members learn, share and collaborate to help support the St. Jude mission.

The community launched on Sept. 15, 2020 and membership has grown to almost 600 members. Learn more about the group.

Meet St. Jude volunteer Shanda

The children of St. Jude is the reason why I do it. If we can do anything to help these children and their families get through the biggest fight of their life, I’m all for it.

Volunteer engagement in a virtual environment

In late summer of 2020, the COVID-19 virus was ramping up, and people across the country were suddenly being furloughed or let go from their jobs. At the same time, Jessica McCaffrey, Phoenix regional director, and Erica Thompson, Las Vegas regional director, found themselves needing extra hands at their regional offices for specialized assignments, like marketing, public relations or outbound calls. Read more about their efforts.

Thank you to our National Volunteer Advisory Council

In recognition of National Volunteer Week 2021, we want to express our appreciation to the ALSAC National Volunteer Advisory Council (NVAC).

NVAC was formed to convene a diverse group of ALSAC volunteers to provide insight about the state and nature of volunteerism. Council members have given feedback on ALSAC volunteer processes, provided insight into the ALSAC volunteer experience and recommended new ways to enhance the experience.

Thank you, council members, for giving your time, talent and expertise to our mission.

St. Jude founder Danny Thomas said, “All of us are born for a reason, but all of us don’t discover why. Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It’s what you do for others.”

Volunteers bring new and exciting ideas, positive energy, commitment and passion. During National Volunteer Week, we would like to express our gratitude for the priceless work you do as a St. Jude volunteer. Your dedication is essential to the work we do. Thank you for the immeasurable and important work you have done and continue to do for the children of St. Jude.  You are essential to help further the lifesaving mission of St. Jude: Finding cures. Saving children.®

- Chris Boysen, Senior Vice President, ALSAC/St. Jude

Why volunteer?

Volunteers around the country, on average, spend 50 hours per year donating their time to the greater good. Studies have shown that volunteerism improves health by strengthening the body, improving mood, and lessening stress. Additionally, volunteering can increase self-esteem, enhance various skills and expand career paths.
