The intern should possess proficiency in the following areas:

Client Services plays a critical role in enabling the technology experience for St. Jude's research, clinical, and administrative communities. Grounded in exceptional service, the team provides frontline technology support, enables technology adoption and workforce readiness, manages technology assets and services, improves processes, and partners across Information Services to identify and deliver opportunities that enhance the customer experience.

Through exposure to multiple Client Services functions, the intern will gain an understanding of how people, processes, data, and technology work together to support the St. Jude mission.

What You'll Experience

During the internship, you may have opportunities to shadow Client Services teams, participate in meetings and discovery activities, contribute to process or service improvement initiatives, analyze information, collaborate with stakeholders, and complete an individual project addressing a real-world opportunity. The experience is designed to provide exposure to both the technical and business sides of delivering technology services within a complex healthcare and research environment.

The intern will work alongside experienced infrastructure engineers in providing hands-on support for research laboratory technology, including microscopes, DNA sequencers, etc.  The candidate will have a hands-on, project-based experience providing solutions that include networking connectivity, information security, systems administration, and the use of HPC storage and computational environments. This experience is suited for individuals seeking careers in.Computer Engineering or Computer Science in the healthcare sciences or scientific research fields. 

The intern will participate in the research, evaluation, implementation and support of mobile software applications that meet the patient facing needs of St. Jude. This opportunity is well suited for individuals seeking careers in fields such as Software Development or UI/UX Design. Previous programming or application development experience is preferred, including experience with native iOS or Android development or familiarity with programming languages such as C#, C++, or Python.

The Project Management Office helps bring ideas to life across many areas of Information Services, including application development, design and construction, information security, clinical systems, and research technology (high-performance computing/advanced research equipment) that supports discovery. As a PMO intern, you will learn how projects move from planning to delivery while working with project managers, technical teams, and business partners on meaningful initiatives that support St. Jude’s mission. This internship is a great fit for students who are curious, organized, and interested in learning how communication, teamwork, planning, and problem-solving help deliver successful projects. You do not need to be deeply technical to apply; we are looking for someone eager to learn, ask questions, contribute ideas, and build practical project management skills in a collaborative healthcare and research environment.

Based on the strengths of the hired intern the projects will range from HPC operations support applications to MLOps applications to HPC code optimization. The candidate will be involved in a project-based experience providing solutions to workflows, automation, and optimization in HPC and MLOps environments. This program is suited for individuals seeking careers in computer engineering, computational science, and high-performance computing in the healthcare sciences field.

Projects will draw from HPCS's core areas of responsibility: HPC infrastructure operations and monitoring, performance benchmarking, operational automation, infrastructure auto-configuration, and data governance/classification for research computing environments. Based on the strengths of the hired intern, the specific project scope may range from building or extending monitoring and benchmarking tools, automating routine operational and configuration workflows, to supporting data classification and cataloging efforts. The candidate will work in either a team or individual capacity, contributing to the design and implementation of these projects across both test and production HPC environments. This program is suited for individuals seeking careers in HPC operations and support in a DevOps fashion, tailored to St. Jude's healthcare research computing environment.

Based on the strengths of the hired intern, the projects will focus on one of the following areas:

• optimizing workload on the High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, 
• testing and implementing frameworks for AI workloads, 
• evaluating new data visualization technologies, or
• automating common operations with the HPRC team.   

The candidate will be involved in a project-based experience providing solutions to workflows, automation, and visualization. This program is suited for individuals seeking careers in computational science, engineering, and high-performance computing in the healthcare sciences field. 

Utilizing the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, the intern will work alongside the Cloud Applications and Technology Support team to enhance their skills in software development or software quality assurance.  

Software Engineering

For individuals interested in software engineering, the intern will work to develop or enhance public facing web-based applications supporting the data-sharing efforts by St. Jude researchers.  Based on the individual’s technical skills, the area of development could be in one or more areas of web application architecture.  Individuals with a passion for programming and an interest in technologies such as Node.js, Java, Python, Bootstrap, microservices, and SQL are welcome to apply. 

Quality Assurance

For individuals interested in software quality assurance, the intern will work to test and validate public facing web-based software applications supporting the data-sharing efforts by St. Jude researchers.  Individuals with a passion for quality assurance, test case development, and user acceptance testing are welcome to apply. 

This program is suited for individuals seeking careers in fields such as Software Engineering, Web Programming, Technical Architecture, or Software Quality Assurance.

The intern will work alongside an experienced business analyst and scrum master assisting with the planning and execution of technology projects supporting the strategic research initiatives at St. Jude.  Responsibilities may include documenting requirements, project management or SCRUM master responsibilities or analytics and metrics. This experience is suited for individuals seeking careers in business analysis, technology management, agile project management including SCRUM Master or product owner, or application support.

Join the Research Information Services Software Engineering Team at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and gain hands-on experience building technology that directly supports groundbreaking research. What you’ll do

Apply AI to Operations

• Examine our infrastructure with an AI-first mindset, identifying where agentic AI and automation can reduce manual work, improve reliability, or speed up delivery.
• Work with AI as a teammate, using it to plan, build, and operate solutions alongside your team, including the agent you'll build.
• Reduce process toil by directing AI coding agents to generate and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
• Improve service reliability through agent workflows, automations, and analytics - along with the dashboards and front-end views that make that data actionable.

Expand your Technology Foundation

• Learn core infrastructure skills in networking, servers, data centers, and endpoint management by working hands-on with the technical teams.
• Explore cloud computing solutions that make infrastructure deployment and management more scalable, flexible, and efficient.

What We’re Looking For:

• Strong curiosity and motivation to grow in areas such as enterprise networking, systems administration, cloud computing, endpoint management, infrastructure automation, observability, or applied AI.
• A basic understanding of how technology infrastructure supports system connectivity and application delivery.
• Some programming experience, such as Python, PowerShell, or similar. Coursework and personal projects count.
• Hands-on experience with AI tools, such as chat assistants, coding agents, or building with an AI API, and an interest in going further.
• The ability to think holistically and combine fragmented concepts into clear, actionable tasks.
• Clear written communication. Much of this work involves documenting processes or isntructions precisely enough for others to follow.
