The St. Jude Facilities Operation Management High School Internship offers a unique opportunity for rising seniors to participate in a work-based learning experience in partnership with the St. Jude Facilities Operation Management Department. The purpose of the program is to prepare students for careers in Operations Management by providing hands-on experience in an operations management environment. Interns will gain valuable skills working alongside industry professionals at St. Jude in a FOM area including Painter, Plumber, HVAC Technician, Mechanic, Auto Mechanic, or Electrician.
Student Eligibility
Eligible high school students must:
- Be 16 years old or older
- Be eligible for the work-study program offered through MSCS CCTE
- Have an attendance record with no more than 4 absences and fewer than 10 tardies
- Complete the online application
- Provide written permission from a legal guardian if selected
- Submit an official transcript if selected
Work Schedule
- 20 hours per week
- First Shift: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.
- Schedule can be flexible:
- 4 hours/day, Monday–Friday, or
- 8 hours/day for 3 days per week.
Program Length
- 15 weeks total
Week 1 – Orientation to FOM
- Day 1: Campus introduction and overview (Copponi).
- Day 2: Overview of Facilities Operations & Maintenance (FOM) with managers and shop representatives.
- Day 3: Safety training, including FOM-specific safety requirements.
- Day 4: Career Pathways Panel
- Example pathway: Apprenticeship → Journeyman
- Electrician speakers: Shane Starnes and Jake Stolarski.
Trade Rotations (Hands-On OJT)
- Students rotate through trades to learn trade basics, safety practices, core skills, and hands-on experience.
- 2 Weeks – Painting
- 2 Weeks – Carpentry
- 2 Weeks – Mechanical (PC or Research areas)
- 2 Weeks – Plumbing
- 2 Weeks – HVAC (PC or Research areas)
- 2 Weeks – Refrigeration
- 2 Weeks – Revisit Favorite Trade(s) for deeper experience
- Electrical rotation will not be included this year due to safety concerns.
