Biostatistics Internship

The Biostatistics Internship offers a motivated individual an opportunity to spend a summer placement within the Department of Biostatistics at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Interns will work side-by-side with professionals on projects in a professional environment to gain insight and experience into the world of statistical and analysis.

The Biostatistics Internship offers motivated graduate students with an opportunity to spend a summer placement within the Department of Biostatistics at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Interns will be matched to a Biostatistics faculty member and work within their team, and the internship will be project-focused with exposure to various components of our working environment. The internship is located in Memphis, TN. 

Candidates should note that our internships are full-time learning experiences. You should expect to be available Monday through Friday during standard office hours June 1 to August 7, 2026 (some flexibility on dates may be determined on a case-by-case basis). 

Typical learning opportunities 

Selected students will typically contribute to at least one of the following during their project: (1) real-world data analysis, (2) software development, and/or (3) methodology development. The exact opportunity will be developed by each faculty mentor and their respective mentee. 

As an experiential and immersive program, you will develop and hone your practical skills in a broad range of areas that could include: 

  • Development of software for real-world applications 
  • Use of simulations for statistics and data science research 
  • Management, analysis, and presentation of real-world data 
  • Design of data collection instruments and data management systems 
  • Interpreting and communicating results to statistical and non-statistical audiences 

Additionally, you may take part in a variety of activities such as hospital tours, networking opportunities, and building relationships with a variety of professionals across the institution. You will have access to a dedicated mentor to continue developing new skills. 

Education required 

  • Interested candidates must be enrolled in an accredited college/university graduate program. Students currently pursuing an undergraduate degree are not eligible for this year’s program. 
  • Candidates are accepted from all majors; an interest in math, statistics, data science, or computer science is preferred. 3.0 GPA or above. GPA will be validated by transcripts and communication with the advisor.

Applicants are expected to review St. Jude Biostatistics faculty mentors and their respective research area(s) and highlight any faculty members who share the applicant's interests. 

Any previous internships or work experience should be included on the CV/resume with a description of the applicant’s roles and contributions during these experiences. 

Deadline to apply

The application deadline for the Summer 2026 internship was January 9, 2026 at 11:59pm US central time. Due to the volume of applicants, we could not accept late applications. 

Following the application process, some applicants were selected for interviews with potential mentors. The successful candidates were selected from the interviewed applicants. 

Successful candidates qualified for a stipend. Depending on budgetary constraints, additional support may have been available for housing and/or travel. Also, St. Jude had reduced-priced housing, which was subject to availability.  However, all housing, food, transportation, and other expenses were the responsibility of the selected intern.
