Children’s charities

Children's charities support the next generation, which is essential for the well-being of our communities. As a charity focused on childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases, St. Jude provides customized care for some of the world's sickest children.

What is a children’s charity?

A children’s charity is an organization dedicated to helping kids. Children's charities cover a variety of needs — supporting children's health, providing for children in need, working to improve education and more — with the common goal of helping to improve kids' lives.

Charities for children's health, like St. Jude, focus on helping kids who face medical challenges. At. St. Jude, we're leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

How do children’s charities work?

Children’s charities work each day to better the lives of the kids they support; some organizations also support the whole family. This work is made possible by raising funds to further the charity's mission of helping kids.

Whether these funds are used for cancer research and treatment, as with St. Jude, or to provide food and clothing to children in need, the work children’s charities do each day is vital to the wellbeing of children globally.

St. Jude: A children’s charity

As one of the world’s premier children’s charities, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital exists to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Treatments developed at St. Jude have helped raise the survival rate for children with cancer in the United States, where 4 out of 5 children survive cancer.

In many countries, however, 1 out of 5 children who develop cancer will survive. We won’t stop until no child dies from cancer, no matter where they live.

As one of the top five ranking hospitals for the treatment of children’s cancer in the world, St. Jude is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Care Center devoted solely to children.

The global impact of St. Jude

Globally, nearly 90% of children with cancer live in low- and middle-income countries. That's why the mission of  St. Jude Global is to improve the survival rates of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases, worldwide, through the sharing of knowledge, technology and organizational skills.

We're working toward the day when every child diagnosed with cancer or another catastrophic disease has access to quality care and treatment.

The local impact of St. Jude

Even as we're dedicated to our mission of helping children worldwide, we have a special, local focus on our campus in Memphis, Tenn. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — so they can focus on helping their child live.

Our newest housing facility, Domino’s Village, is home to some of the families of children undergoing treatment at St. Jude. Domino’s Village provides fully-furnished living quarters free of charge, along with a sense of community. The shared experiences and emotional support for families and children facing tough times contributes to the well-being of the whole family.

Financial contributions and donations

A substantial amount of financial support for children's charities, including St. Jude, comes from generous donors. In addition to one-time donations, many charities provide options for monthly or continuous giving, memorial and dedication giving, workplace giving and more.

Volunteering and fundraising

Volunteering is a way to get involved with a charity by donating your time. Opportunities vary depending on the charity, but at St. Jude, we have options for you to participate in events and fundraising activities in person and virtually.

For example, we host many fitness fundraisers throughout the year, including the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend, our single largest one-day fundraiser, which relies on the help of thousands of volunteers.
