Sweet and outgoing, Weiming was diagnosed with a rare disease, an immunodeficiency known as bubble boy disease and came to St. Jude.
When Weiming was just 4 months old, he was growing slowly and his pediatrician in his home country of China noticed signs of low oxygen levels. He was diagnosed with pneumonia but his care team was puzzled by his lack of telltale symptoms. After a series of tests, it was discovered that he had a life-threatening immunodeficiency. After spending 26 days in the ICU, Weiming’s doctor gave the family earth-shattering news – there was nothing the hospital in China could do to heal him.
We were no longer the only people who could take care of Weiming. We now had doctors who could help him. St. Jude saved our baby.

When it felt like all hope was lost, the family learned that St. Jude doctors and researchers were studying this very rare disease and their local doctor was able to refer them. Weiming received treatment in the form of a gene therapy developed at St. Jude.

Weiming now has a functioning immune system and gets to snuggle with his parents and play like other children.
