Program Overview
The Global Pediatric Medicine Fellowship prepares physicians to expand access to high-quality, evidence-based care for children facing catastrophic hematologic and oncologic illnesses across the world.
Fellows gain clinical, leadership, research, and policy expertise that enables them to partner with global institutions, build sustainable healthcare capacity, and drive meaningful progress toward health equity for children everywhere.
By completion of the fellowship, trainees will demonstrate advanced competency in four core domains:
1. Global Clinical & Leadership Expertise
- Facilitate delivery of evidence-based pediatric hematologic and oncologic care in diverse global settings
- Strengthen health systems through effective leadership and multisectoral collaboration
2. Achieving Health Equity Through Capacity Building & Partnership
- Work collaboratively with international partners to build sustainable care delivery models
- Prioritize ethical, bidirectional partnerships
- Support locally driven solutions to reduce disparities in child health outcomes
3. Research in Global Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Medicine
- Design and conduct clinically relevant research using appropriate methodologies for resource-limited settings
- Translate research findings into actionable improvements in pediatric cancer and hematology care
4. Education, Advocacy & Policy
- Contribute to educational initiatives to advance global standards of care
- Participate in advocacy and policy discussions that shape pediatric hematology/oncology practice worldwide
- Inform policy decisions through evidence-based recommendations

Global Pediatric Medicine Fellows who previously completed a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship will spend 20% of their time providing supervised clinical care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Evaluate and treat pediatric hematology/oncology patients
- Direct therapy and participate in complex clinical decision-making
- Engage in patient/family discussions with growing independence
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary clinical teams
Fellows begin under direct supervision and progress toward increasing autonomy as competency milestones are achieved.

Leukemia/Lymphoma/Hematology & BMTCT Conference — Weekly
- Topics span hematology/oncology and transplant/cellular therapy
- Fellows and faculty present; GPHOM NST Fellows present at least once annually
Grand Rounds — Weekly
- Institution-wide lectures on research, clinical innovation, and emerging topics
Systems-Based Practice Seminars — Monthly
- Focus on patient safety, quality improvement, and healthcare systems
Clinical Fellow Research Symposium — Annually
- Platform for presenting research and receiving faculty and peer feedback
Fellows Rounds — Weekly
- Encouraged participation with the accredited PHO fellowship cohort
Project Concept Proposal Meetings — Ongoing
- Required presentations of research concepts
- Opportunities for collaborative feedback, refinement, and project design

Research Opportunities
Research is a central component of the fellowship, emphasizing global relevance, feasibility, and sustainability.
Research Training Includes
- Exposure to global research methodologies (qualitative, quantitative, implementation science, epidemiology, health systems research)
- Development of skills to design, conduct, analyze, and disseminate research projects
- Engagement in projects addressing priority needs in resource-limited settings
- Participation in section-wide concept proposal meetings for structured feedback
Scholarly Expectations
Fellows will:
- Develop a primary research or program-evaluation project
- Engage in collaborative research with international partners
- Present findings at institutional and global academic venues
This fellowship program is a 1-year program.

Eligibility
- Eligible applicants will have completed a fellowship program in pediatric hematology and/or oncology, pediatric surgery, pediatric infectious diseases, or pediatric intensive care.
- Must have successfully completed USMLE steps 1, 2, and 3.
- Eligible for H-1 visa (if needed)

Applying for Fellowship
Eligibility
Applicants with medicine/pediatrics training who have completed fellowship training in pediatric hematology/oncology are preferred. However, exceptional applicants trained in general pediatrics, internal medicine and family medicine are also encouraged to apply.
International applicants must be ECFMG certified.
