Aditya Gaur, MD
Improving infectious disease outcomes for children and youth, with emphasis on HIV and translational medicine
Overview
Infectious diseases pose unique challenges and a need for advocacy for children, youth and their caregivers. Children are not just “little adults,” and youth can often become lost in the transition between pediatric and adult care. With a focus on HIV prevention and treatment, I lead a program that pursues holistic clinical care and innovative clinical research powered by the engagement of patients and families and an emphasis on shared decision making. We have the tools to end the HIV epidemic and our team pursues no less for the community we serve. Our experience conducting drug development and community participatory clinical trials uniquely positions us to take other infectious disease discoveries through early-stage clinical development as part of our Translational Medicine Program. Together with our HIV and Translational Medicine Program we not only support HIV and other drug and vaccine translational science but exposing trainees and staff to this future-looking career path.
Gaur research summary
As director of the Division of HIV and Translational Medicine at St. Jude, I lead research that leverages a clinical and translational platform that integrates prospective clinical trials, implementation science, community partnership and pharmacokinetic and safety studies. The goal is to accelerate effective prevention and treatment strategies for pediatric and youth populations.
With my focus on HIV, I lead and support pediatric and adolescent clinical trials that evaluate new antiretroviral agents, formulations and administration strategies. We are interested in examining long-acting injectable antiretroviral treatment and prevention approaches, along with novel approaches, for children and youth across the continuum of HIV prevention and care. Our program has experience with a diverse portfolio of clinical and research interventions, including most pediatric and youth-focused drug development trials related to HIV prevention and care. This expertise has directly translated into important translational research contributions beyond HIV, including antimalarials and COVID-19 vaccines.
In partnership with the Adolescent Trials Network and other implementation science studies, I also examine adherence, linkage to and retention in care and youth-centered interventions. I additionally use institutional and multicenter partnerships to translate clinical observations into public health interventions, including COVID-19 workforce screening and antimalarial drug development. I strive to ensure my research program bridges clinical care, clinical trials and public health implementation to bring safer, effective and accessible infectious disease prevention and treatment strategies to children and youth.
All the work in my research program has primed our division to guide St. Jude discoveries focused on infectious diseases from pre-clinical to early-stage clinical development with the goal of improving outcomes in our children and youth.

About Aditya Gaur
Aditya Gaur, MD, is a board-certified pediatric infectious diseases physician who specializes in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and translational medicine. Gaur serves as the founding director of the Division of HIV and Translational Medicine at St. Jude and leads several initiatives to end the HIV epidemic and increase HIV prevention and care efforts. He received his MD from the Government Medical College in Surat, India, and completed fellowships in pediatric infectious diseases and HIV in the Department of Infectious Diseases at St. Jude. Gaur has led over 65 clinical research protocols, including investigator initiated first-in-human studies, National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded cooperative group protocols and as a site-principal investigator for multiple NIH (networks: ATN, IMPAACT, HPTN, HVTN, MTN) and pharmaceutical-funded research protocols. He is committed to the audacious goal of ending the HIV epidemic and supporting promising infectious disease drug and vaccine discoveries through early-stage clinical development.
