Interventional Radiology

At St. Jude, our Interventional Radiology (IR) team uses advanced imaging — like ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT and MRI — to perform minimally invasive procedures on children of all ages. These techniques often take the place of traditional surgery, which means:

• Smaller incisions (or sometimes no incision)
• Lower risk of complications
• Shorter recovery times
• Less pain and discomfort for the patient

Our pediatric IR program offers a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, with a special focus on caring for children with cancer. Our team provides cutting edge cancer treatments, minimally invasive pain procedures, and a variety of other supportive care techniques to ensure the best possible outcomes.

We offer a full range of interventional procedures with a focus on oncology care. The procedures we perform include:

• Cancer Treatment
  • Radioembolization: liver cancer treatment with Yttrium-90 (Y90)
  • Histotripsy: non-invasive ultrasound treatment of tumors
  • Ablation: cryoablation, microwave, radiofrequency, pulsed electric fields
  • Pain and palliative procedures: neurolysis and other end-of-life care
  • Lumbar Puncture- diagnostic, intrathecal treatment
• Vascular access and interventions
  • CVL placement = SQ Port, Tunneled, PICC, Temporary
  • Thrombolysis
  • Angioplasty

  • Lymphangiography-Chyle leak embolization
  • Fistula repair
  • Tumor and Organ Biopsy
  • Drain Placement- Renal, Biliary, Thoracic, Peritoneal

The patient will be treated by a pediatric interventional radiologist and nurse practitioners who partner with our patient’s primary care team. This close collaboration means care that is personalized, seamless, and designed around our patient’s unique needs. Our IR clinicians are supported by:

• ARRT-VI registered radiologic technologists
• Specially trained registered nurses
• Child life specialists who help reduce fear and anxiety
