Leonel's story
Around Thanksgiving 2024, Leonel’s parents grew concerned about his frequent vomiting and trouble with balance. Doctors soon discovered a brain tumor.
At just 3 years old, Leonel underwent surgery to remove the mass and was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor. He was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® in Memphis, Tennessee.
His mom, Yuris, said she had heard of St. Jude, but she never imagined her only son would one day be a patient. Leonel arrived at St. Jude with his parents in December 2024 and continues treatment, which has included proton beam radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
It was heartbreaking to get here, but I also knew he was in good hands.

Leonel’s dad, also named Leonel, said he’s grateful for all St. Jude does for patients and their families. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — so they can focus on helping their child live.
We feel very blessed to be here. The hospital and its staff are so attentive, and they take good care of my son.
