Nico's story
Nico has always been super active, including playing competitive soccer and running with his dad, who serves in the Navy.
In fall 2025, chest pain led Nico’s parents to take him to a pediatrician. An X-ray revealed fluid in his lungs. Further testing in the emergency room found a chest tumor. Nico was referred to St. Jude which confirmed a diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma, the second most common type of bone cancer in children.
At St. Jude, Nico’s treatment included chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor and radiotherapy. He completed treatment in June 2026. “It felt completely random and all of a sudden, life as you know it was done,” his mom, Maya recalled.
I was so blown away by everything at St. Jude. They have thought of everything here, about every aspect of life, not just the medical treatment.

Nico, the youngest of two boys, liked to spend hours creating things in the St. Jude Maker Space, which provides a place for patients and their families to unwind and explore their creativity between treatments. He also likes to watch anime, play with his dog, a cavapoo named Evie, and cook with his mom. He dreams of owning a pizzeria with his dad one day.
How is Nico doing?
Nico has slowly resumed his active life. In the summer of 2026, he participated in different camps, including tennis, and spent time with friends. Four months before his diagnosis, Nico and his family moved to Tennessee from Germany, where his father had been stationed for two years.
We were incredibly lucky to have wound up at St. Jude.
