About Marcus Fischer

Dr. Marcus Fischer holds a dual appointment in the departments of Structural Biology and Chemical Biology & Therapeutics. He received his BSc and MSc from the University of Lübeck, Germany, and his PhD from the University of York, UK, and did his post-doctoral training under Prof. Brian Shoichet at the University of California San Francisco in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Dr. Fischer also serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Fischer has chosen to eschew the traditional cryogenic practices of crystallography in favor of a more complete view of the protein conformational landscape that includes protein flexibility and hydration.

Artwork by Irin Tom awarded third place in Art of Science Competition

The Scientific Communications team in the Strategic Communication, Education and Outreach (SCEO) Department hosted its annual Art of Science Competition, calling upon St. Jude employees to submit original artistic renderings of scientific concepts related to this year’s theme, Illustrating the Stories of Science. Irin Tom’s acrylic painting, titled Stories of Science, was awarded third place.

Stories of Science celebrates humanity’s timeless quest to understand the world - from recognizing patterns in the stars and harnessing fire, to uncovering the laws of physics, mapping the human genome, and developing therapies once thought impossible. These are stories written through curiosity, perseverance, and collaborations that transcend borders, cultures, and generations. At St. Jude, these stories take on an even deeper meaning; they embody our shared determination and desire to protect life at its dawn, ensuring that the children of today can awaken to a brighter, healthier tomorrow.
