William (Bill) L. Greene, BS Pharmacy, PharmD, BCPS, FASHP, FCCP

Dr. Greene recently retired from the position of Chief Pharmaceutical Officer and Vice-Chair in the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences after more than 15 years at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. In this role, he was responsible for the functions and personnel which comprise the Pharmaceutical Services division of the department – supporting all medication-related care and clinical research involving St. Jude patients. He retains an appointment as Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Translational Science within the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, continuing an affiliation which has existed for 40 years.

Bill has a long history of engagement and leadership in pharmacy resident training. In 2008, with the support of St. Jude leadership, he collaborated with other health-system pharmacists within the Memphis community to create the Mid-South Regional Pharmacy Residents Conference. This conference exists for the support of pharmacy residents and resident preceptors in the mid-south region of the United States as they pursue professional development.

Dr. Greene received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and his Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, then completed residency training at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. From 1982 through 1991, he worked with Baptist Hospital in Memphis as a Clinical Pharmacist, developing significant roles in inpatient clinical pharmacy practice. Following this, he served as the leader for clinical pharmacy services at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, serving with corporate leadership for the final 2 years of his 15-year tenure with this health system. Throughout this time, he was actively involved in both student and resident pharmacist training, and was the Residency Program Director for the Methodist PGY1 program for 8 years. In 2007, Bill joined St. Jude and continued his strong interests in clinical pharmacy services and their impact, medication safety, and performance improvement related to medication therapy.

Bill has been engaged throughout his career in regional and national professional organizations including Tennessee Pharmacists Association, Tennessee Society of Health System Pharmacists, ACCP, ASHP, the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, and the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. He has served in multiple appointed and elected professional leadership roles and has received a number of professional awards and recognitions. He served for several years as a volunteer residency program surveyor with the Accreditation Services Division of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. His interest in, and commitment to, pharmacy resident training is best demonstrated in his close involvement with more than 200 residents over a 30-year period.
